Luck of the draw.
Ordered 2 of them. One been working fine for a few weeks. The other one was dead on arrival. Complete short on the input. Removed input cap and it checked OK. The LM2596 IC was an input short.

Easy to Use
Easy to hook up and adjust. Potentiometer is touchy but you can get almost any voltage setting you want. I am running a ESP8266 from three Lithium Ion batteries. 12.3 volts in set to 5.1 volts out.

Wrong Components
I ordered 3 and all 3 did not work. The feedback resistor to ground needs to be 1000 ohms not the 330 ohms installed. With the 1k resistor as suggested by the LM2596 manufacturer, it works fine, but you can waste a day finding the problem.

Saw a cold solder joint on regulator chip
I received one of these that was intermittent, and I found a cold solder joint on one of the pins of the regulator chip. If yours isnt working, use a pointed tool to see if you can lift any of the pins off its pad. Its hard to get the iron tip in to fix it, but that fixed my problem. Otherwise, its a really handy converter at a good price.

Problem with Circuit Board
I have 3 of these same units which I have just found to be defective. There is no connection from Vout to the inside. I found I could get output by taking it from the top of the output capacitor. I do have an earlier one..slightly different that works fine?

Great voltage controller
I replaced the 10-turn pot with a regular pot on 3 leads, and built the whole thing into a box. I use these as remote controls for my Garden Train layout, and they do work wonderfully!

Stable for Raspberry Pi
Been working solid for about 2-3 months now. Powering a Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi 2 B+ with these guys. Adjusted voltage to about 5.18 volts and it barley drops below 5 volts, even with a 1 watt Wifi adapter. My Servos have there own LM2596 as well, all running from a 12Volt UPS Battery.
